Coordinating outfits for a large group can be daunting, especially if you’re also traveling and planning a vacation. Here are a few tips to help you decide what to wear for your family photoshoot.

Don’t try to completely match. While it may seem like an easy solution, everyone wearing the same thing can look outdated, and everyone kind of blends together. Instead, consider sticking to neutrals and a pop of color in different shades. For instance, if blue is your pop of color, one family member may wear a dress that has blue in the pattern. One family member may have dark blue accents with a tan dress, another person may have teal in their shirt, etc. Another idea is to base your color palette off of one persons outfit, like a dress that has a few colors in it. Everyone can incorporate colors into their outfits from that dress. I usually recommend avoiding too much green as a lot of my outdoor locations have a lot of greenery in the background and I don’t want you to blend in!

Feel free to mix patterns, wear layers and incorporate different textures and accessories. Try to avoid too much bright white.

Don’t wear something that makes you feel uncomfortable! If you feel unsure about the way you look, it can show on your face or you may not be happy with how you look in the photos. Wearing something that makes you feel confident allows you to focus on your family and enjoy the moment more. If you’re self conscious about your arms, don’t go sleeveless! Same goes for kids. If you have them wearing something itchy or too tight, they may be unhappy throughout the shoot. If they aren’t focused on their clothes, they may be more free to enjoy themselves and smile!

Ladies, even if you don’t usually use hair spray, I recommend doing a light spritz and smoothing down your fly away hairs on the top and sides of your head. Florida humidity can do a number on your hair. Feel free to wear a little more makeup than you do in your day to day life. Lashes usually look great on camera. You may want to bring a lint brush and or a hairbrush to the shoot, and consider ironing clothes the night before if they are prone to wrinkles.

Overall, don’t worry too much. As long as you’re comfortable and confident you will be fine. It’s all about remembering the time spent with family anyway!

I hope this helps you decide what to wear for your family photo session. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
